Navigating Sheffield Family Court

If your case requires a court hearing, it will most likely take place at the Sheffield Combined Court Centre on West Bar (S3 8PH). We understand that attending court can be a stressful experience, so we aim to make getting there as easy as possible.

The court is centrally located and easy to reach:

By Tram: It is just a 5-minute walk from the Cathedral tram stop (Blue and Yellow routes).

By Car: While there is no parking at the court itself, the NCP on Wellington Street and the Rockingham Street Car Park are both close by and within easy walking distance of both the court and our Cubo office.

By Bus: Several local bus routes stop directly outside the court on West Bar/Workhouse Lane, including the 57, 81, and 86 services.

Our solicitors are highly experienced in representing clients at the Sheffield Law Courts, so we can guide you through every step of the process and explain exactly what to expect on the day of your hearing.

If you cannot resolve your case amicably, you’ll attend Sheffield Combined Court Centre. To find out more information, read our helpful guide on what to expect at Sheffield Combined Court Centre.

  • Do your Sheffield lawyers specialise in divorce?

As the UK’s largest team of dedicated family solicitors, divorce is our bread and butter. We’ve helped numerous couples in Sheffield through their divorce with ease. It doesn’t matter if you’re the respondent or the one initiating the application – we can help on all sides.

We understand that this is an intensely emotional and stressful time, but our lawyers are here to guide you through the process in terms that make sense to you. Sometimes, divorce isn’t as simple as it sounds, and we know this. With years of experience in complex cases, we can also aid with subsequent legal matters that arise during divorce, like financial settlements and child arrangement orders. To help you understand these processes better, we have created comprehensive guides on how financial settlements work and what to expect from a child arrangements order. This way, you feel confident in the decisions you’re making for your life post-divorce.

If you’re someone with substantial assets or complex financial structures, we can help there, too. We often represent high-net-worth individuals through their divorce. Our divorce solicitors in Sheffield work alongside our internal forensic accountants to ensure that no stone is left unturned. By having a complete team of experts supporting you, you can rest assured that your strategy will be top-class and have everything you need to move forward with life, confidently.

No matter your circumstances, the Stowe Family Law team will be by your side.

  • How do I start the divorce proceedings?

Applying for a divorce application signifies the beginning of your divorce proceedings. There are two ways you can apply for this – alongside your ex-spouse as joint applicants or, if you’d prefer, as a sole applicant.

Our Sheffield divorce lawyers always recommend that you and your ex figure this out early to prevent any delays and any further divorce costs along the way.

We understand that trying to ensure that this is already an overwhelming time for you without having the application deadlines on top of it. Why don’t you get in touch with us and leave the hassle to our experts? They’ll support and guide you through your application, so it’s one less thing for you to stress about.

  • Can your solicitors help me respond to a divorce application?

We’ve had numerous Sheffield clients come to us in a panic that they’ve been asked to respond to a divorce application and they don’t know what it means or what to do. If you’re in this situation, our expert team is here to help.

We understand that this is a scary time, but not with us. We’ll listen to your circumstances and walk you through the responsibilities of responding to a divorce application. There’s a lot of legal jargon, but we can put it in terms you understand to allow you to feel comfortable and confident in your decisions.

  • What do I need to know before arranging child custody?

When organising child arrangements (formerly known as child custody) with your ex-partner, emotions can be high. You want your kids to stay with you, so you always know they’re happy and safe. But your ex feels the same way.

Whenever our Sheffield children’s solicitors are working on child arrangements, we always strive to ensure that the children are the priority. We find an arrangement that works for the whole family – not just the parents.

We recognise that these situations can become complex, but that doesn’t scare us. We’ve got years of experience in child arrangement order cases, meaning we’ve worked on a multitude of complexities and complications. Whatever your situation, we’re here to help.

  • Do I need a lawyer to reach a divorce settlement?

A solicitor isn’t always required when organising the settlement for your divorce. However, they can be hugely beneficial.

For example, it’s no secret that any marriage comes with years of financial ties – whether it’s the family home, investments, or pensions. Therefore, trying to untangle this can be incredibly difficult and emotional. So, having an expert by your side really can make all the difference.

We’ll cover all of your assets (even the ones you had before you were married), so you have everything you need to move forward once your divorce is complete. Our Sheffield team has helped clients from all backgrounds, including high-net-worth individuals with assets abroad. Reach out to our lawyers to find out more.

  • What is the process for ending a civil partnership?

We recognise that taking the decision to end a civil partnership is not an easy one. Especially when you consider that many people actually do not know what this looks like.

To be able to dissolve your civil partnership, you must have been in it for at least 12 months. Once here, you will be able to receive the same entitlements as couples who divorce. If you’re not sure where to begin, you don’t have to do it alone. The Stowe Family Law team is here to guide you through the process. Sometimes, dissolving a civil partnership also comes with further challenges, like financial settlements and child arrangements – we can help with that too.

Let us take the strain, so you can get back to what really matters.

  • Why should I choose Stowe Family Law’s Sheffield solicitors?

With so many law firms out there, it can be hard to know which is the right one for your needs.

Stowe Family Law is the UK’s largest team of dedicated family solicitors who have been helping families across the UK for over 50 years. As we specialise in family law, it allows us to be experts in our field, providing our clients with quality service and advice. So much so, that we’re recognised by both the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for our commitment to getting our clients success.

If you’re looking for a team of experts who will listen to your circumstances, provide tailored solutions, and be there to support you through the entire process, choose Stowe Family Law.

  • Do the Sheffield Stowe team have any accreditations?

Yes! Our law team in Sheffield is recognised by the Legal 500 and also are Resolution-accredited specialists in various aspects of family law.

  • How long is the current divorce wait time in South Yorkshire?

Currently, the minimum wait time for a divorce in South Yorkshire is 26 weeks, based on the no-fault divorce system. For applications such as conditional and final orders, the average wait time is slightly longer – 40 and 70 weeks, respectively.

  • How can I avoid going to court?

The best way to ensure your family law case doesn’t end up in court is to opt for alternative dispute resolution options. Mediation is one solution which is often cheaper, quicker, and less stressful for the whole family.

No matter what you choose, we recommend being open to negotiation and keeping all communication civil where possible. We understand that this can be challenging, though, so having one of our Sheffield-based family solicitors by your side to guide you through the process is best.

  • Do you offer collaborative law in Sheffield?

We recognise that litigation isn’t right for everyone, which is why we offer a range of alternative dispute methods. For example, our Resolution-accredited lawyers specialise in mediation, collaborative law, and arbitration. Although all slightly different, our services prioritise a non-confrontational approach to all cases, ensuring a solution is met that is agreed to by all parties.

Not sure which is right for you? Our Client Care team will be able to recommend the best option for your needs.

  • What does a family solicitor do?

A family lawyer provides legal advice, guidance, and, in our case, support during this difficult time. We will listen to your circumstances and tailor our advice and strategy to meet your needs, answering any questions or concerns you may have.

We can provide guidance with any required documentation, represent you in court if required, and keep you on track to prevent any delays and extra costs. No matter your circumstances, your rights, interests, and wellbeing are our top priority, so you can be confident that we’re doing everything we can to resolve your issues efficiently and effectively.
